Tips for designing a hallway entrance

A place of reception and passage par excellence, the entrance corridor is however often neglected, or even forgotten, when fitting out a home. Well arranged and decorated, it becomes a functional and aesthetic room in its own right, pleasant to walk through. This is why your entrance hallway deserves your full attention.

Arrange your entrance according to the space you have available

Before you start designing your entrance hallway, take the time to look at the space you have available. Consider its dimensions, its ceiling height, the possible presence of doors or windows, as well as the obstacles that may impact its layout. Avoid overloading it at the risk of making it oppressive, optimize the lighting to make it welcoming, and use the corners to create additional storage spaces.

If you have a narrow hallway, the priority is to opt for light and soothing colors: neutral tones such as gray, beige or even white will visually enlarge it. You can also add a touch of color by using accessories or paintings: hung on the walls, they do not encroach on the available floor space. You can also take advantage of your entrance as a territory of expression by choosing, for example, a dark shade on the back wall. This technique will bring an illusion of depth to your entrance. Wallpaper is also an excellent idea for adding a very trendy graphic side or creating an original trompe-l'oeil decoration in your entrance. Floral, exotic patterns or even a textured effect are preferred. If you have doors in your entrance hallway, consider differentiating the colors of their frames to create a 3D effect and a unique style. Opt for hard-wearing and easy-to-maintain floor coverings such as wood, tiles or vinyl.

Focus on light and decoration

Maximize natural light by using mirrors or reflective elements on your walls to give your entryway a feeling of openness. Enhance it with lighting such as wall lights or pendant lights that are both practical and aesthetic. When it comes to decoration, let your personality express itself through paintings, framed photographs, rugs or even plants that will bring a touch of trendy nature to the atmosphere.

Choose a style that suits you

Beyond aesthetics, a hallway can also offer a functional space if you select suitable storage solutions. The furniture must be designed for this often cramped space where circulation must remain as fluid as possible: avoid furniture that is too bulky and favor shallow consoles, shelves placed high up, hanging furniture or even storage blocks attached to the wall. It is also preferable to favor several small pieces of furniture with different functions rather than choosing a single piece of furniture which could overwhelm the room. Also remember to display your objects, your frames or even your books on your wall shelves. Depending on your tastes, different styles are available to you: minimalist with simple lines and few decorative objects, Scandinavian with light colors, natural materials and a warm atmosphere, industrial with metal, concrete and dark colors for a modern and urban aspect, or even bohemian, via bright colors and ethnic fabrics for a chic artistic atmosphere.

Select furniture suitable for your entrance

There are several solutions for furnishing your hallway. Wall shelves are an ideal solution because in addition to being functional, they do not take up the floor space you have available. They also allow you to beautify your hallway by displaying your decoration. Coat hooks offer the same advantages as shelves and allow you to use your entrance hallway as a cloakroom. Decorate them with a mirror and a pretty bench to place your shoes on, you will definitely have a functional space! If the dimensions of your hallway allow it, opt for a large storage unit with drawers to keep what you need on a daily basis within reach, or a coat rack to hang your bags, umbrellas, coats, as well as your hats.
